Quick answer: The craft of glove-making in Târgu Mureș, Transylvania, goes back to 1925. NM Gloves works today with more than thirty experienced glove makers there, and every pair is cut and sewn by hand in the workshop.
This is a piece about the people who make our gloves. Here is who they are, what they do, and how we work together.
How long have gloves been made in Târgu Mureș?
Since 1925. Generations of cutters and sewers have practised the craft there, in the heart of Transylvania, passing it on as they went.
How many glove makers work with NM Gloves?
More than thirty. Each one carries years of experience in their hands: cutters who know how to read a hide, sewers who have spent years on the same seams. In our workshop in Târgu Mureș, they cut and sew every pair we sell.
How does NM Gloves work with them?
The division of work is simple: we bring the orders, the leathers and the customers; the glove makers bring the knowledge. Our story page tells it in more detail.
What does a glove maker actually do?
Three things, each learned over years. Cutting: reading a hide for its stretch and grain, then cutting every piece with glove shears so the glove fits the hand rather than simply covering it. Sewing: joining the fingers, thumb and side panels with a seam that lasts, on the machine or, for our hand-sewn models, entirely by hand. Finishing: shaping the gloves on metal hand forms, trimming them and checking each pair before it leaves the bench.

How long does one pair take?
A hand-sewn model takes up to eight hours per pair: a full working day, for one person, for two gloves. Our dark brown peccary winter gloves are sewn by hand throughout and lined with cashmere; they show that kind of work better than any description can.
Which leathers do they work with?
Deerskin from Finland, soft and the hardest-wearing leather we use. Lambskin and nappa from Italy, nappa in 35 colours. Peccary from Peru, the leather of a wild South American relative of the pig, not the wild boar. Carpincho, the leather of the capybara. And shearling, the warmest glove we make. Linings are cashmere, rabbit fur (the warmest sewn-in lining) and silk for long gloves.
Each leather goes to the glove it suits best: deerskin for everyday and driving gloves, lambskin and nappa for fine and dress gloves, peccary for the softest feel, carpincho for grip and its dotted grain.
Two pairs that show the range: black deerskin winter gloves with a strap closure and cashmere lining, and camel deerskin driving gloves with a crochet back. Our leather guide compares every leather side by side.
Can they make a pair to my measurements?
Yes. Standard sizes run from 7.5 to 10 for men and 6.5 to 8.5 for women; see our sizing chart. Lined and unlined gloves are cut to the same size, so take your usual size; if you fall between two, write to us before ordering. If none fits, send us your measurements and choose the leather, colour, lining and stitching. A made-to-measure pair takes up to five days in the workshop and 8–12 days in total to reach you within the EU.
Why does it matter who makes a glove?
Because the skill sits in the hands. A pattern can be copied; knowing how a particular hide will behave once it is cut takes years at the bench. Every order helps keep that skill in daily use. You will find their work across our winter gloves collection.
Buying from a workshop also means there is someone to write to. If a pair needs a repair, or a size question needs answering before you order, the people who made your gloves are in the same town, and your message reaches them.
