Two lengths, two different jobs

Semi-long gloves come in two reaches, both measured from the base of the thumb rather than the wrist: 16–20 cm, which sits partway up the forearm, and 28–30 cm, which puts the top edge at roughly the elbow. They work with a three-quarter sleeve and with a coat, and they read as considered rather than formal.

Opera length runs 40–42 cm from the same point, which takes it well past the elbow and high onto the upper arm — on most people close to the armpit. These are occasion gloves — weddings, black tie, concerts, ceremonies — and they are worn with something sleeveless, because there is nowhere for a sleeve to go.

Questions we get asked

How do I measure for long gloves?

Your size comes from your hand: measure around the knuckles with the hand half-bent, thumb left out. The length is a separate choice, and it is quoted from the base of the thumb — run a tape from there up the inside of your arm and you will see exactly where 28–30 cm and 40–42 cm land on you. If neither is right, tell us where you want the glove to end and we will make the pair to fit.

Over or under the sleeve?

Under, if the sleeve reaches. Long gloves are meant to be the sleeve — layering them over a fitted sleeve bunches the fabric and spoils the line of both.

Why silk lining?

Because a long glove has to slide on. Silk lets the leather move over the arm instead of gripping it, and it stops the inside feeling clammy at a long event.
