What long gloves do to a look

They change the line of the arm rather than simply covering it. That is the whole point of them, and it is why they have stayed in use for evening wear long after everyday gloves stopped being required.

The practical version: a long glove takes the eye along the arm and finishes an outfit that would otherwise stop at the shoulder. With a sleeveless dress it does more work than jewellery.

Which length for which occasion?

Opera length, 40–42 cm, for black tie, weddings and anything floor-length. Semi-long comes in two reaches, 16–20 cm and 28–30 cm, for a cocktail dress, a three-quarter sleeve, or daywear where a full opera glove would be too much. Every figure is measured from the base of the thumb, not the wrist — so opera reaches high on the upper arm, 28–30 cm reaches roughly the elbow, and 16–20 cm sits partway up the forearm.

Will they fit my arms?

Send us your hand measurement and tell us where you want the glove to end, and we will make sure of it. Run a tape from the base of the thumb up the inside of your arm to see where 28–30 cm and 40–42 cm fall on you.

Can I eat and drink in them?

Traditionally gloves come off to eat and go back on afterwards — you can hold a glass in them without any difficulty. Silk lining means they slide off and on without a struggle.
