Deerskin Gloves

If you are buying one proper pair of leather gloves, buy deerskin. It is soft from the first wear, breathable, and tougher than any other glove leather we work with.

Ours comes from Finland. Driving gloves, crochet-backed pairs and winter gloves lined in cashmere or rabbit fur, all cut and sewn by hand in Târgu Mureș, Transylvania.

What a five-year-old pair looks like

Better than a new one, in most people's opinion. Deerskin darkens slightly where the hand touches things, the grain settles, and the shape stops being a glove shape and becomes your hand's shape. Customers send us photos of pairs they have had for a decade and the gloves still look like something you would wear.

That is the argument for deerskin over a cheaper leather. It is not that it looks better on day one — it is that it is still going on day three thousand.

Ours comes from Finland and is cut and sewn by hand in Târgu Mureș, Transylvania. Start with deerskin driving gloves if you drive, or compare the four leathers in our leather guide.

Questions we get asked

Does deerskin stretch too much?

It stretches where your hand needs it and then stops. The one mistake to avoid is buying a size up because the first week feels snug; do that and you will have a loose pair for years afterwards.

Is it waterproof?

No leather is, but deerskin handles damp better than most and does not stiffen up afterwards the way some do. Let a wet pair dry flat at room temperature and away from heat, and there is no lasting harm.

Deerskin or lambskin as a gift?

Deerskin, unless you know the person wants a formal dress glove. It suits more situations, it survives being thrown in a coat pocket, and the fit is more forgiving if you are guessing at a size.

Is deerskin warm enough for winter?

Unlined, it is a three-season glove. Lined with cashmere or rabbit fur it carries you through most European winters — those pairs are in winter gloves.
