Why people still wear driving gloves

The habit started because early cars gave you no choice. The wheel was thin, the cabin was often open to the weather, and there was no heater. You drove in gloves or you drove with cold hands sliding around the rim.

Cars got comfortable and the habit stayed, because the practical reasons never quite went away. Leather keeps your palm dry on a long drive, makes a wheel that has sat in August sun or January frost a non-issue, and gives you a better hold on a thin rim. And there is the part nobody needs convincing of: it feels good to drive in them.

Every pair here is cut and sewn by hand in our workshop in Târgu Mureș, Transylvania. If the size, colour or stitching you want isn't listed, tell us and we will make it — about the bespoke service.

Questions we get asked

Should driving gloves be tight?

Close, yes. A glove that shifts around on your hand defeats the point. You want the leather following your knuckles with no slack in the palm, so if you land between two sizes, take the smaller one. Measure around your knuckles with your hand half-bent and the thumb left out, then check the sizing chart.

Full-finger, crochet back or fingerless?

Full-finger and unlined is the pair to own if you are only buying one. A crochet back swaps the leather on top of the hand for cotton, which is what you want in summer or in a car with no air conditioning. Fingerless leaves the fingertips out, which is the practical choice if your car has a touchscreen — leather doesn't register on an infotainment screen, bare fingertips do.

Which leather should I pick?

Deerskin if you drive often and want one pair to last years: deerskin driving gloves. Lambskin if they go with a suit. Peccary or carpincho for the rarest leather available — both stay soft in the cold, where most leathers stiffen: peccary driving gloves.
