Matching the glove to your winter

"Warm" is not one thing. A damp 5°C morning and a dry −15°C one need different gloves, and buying for the coldest week of the year usually means being too warm for the other twenty.

Roughly how we advise it: unlined leather down to about 5°C, cashmere from there to freezing, rabbit fur below that. If you are outside for hours rather than minutes, move one step up.

Men's and women's, in deerskin, lambskin and peccary, all cut and sewn by hand in Târgu Mureș, Transylvania. Tell us how cold it gets where you live and we will suggest a lining, or take the warmest leather we work with in peccary winter gloves.

Questions we get asked

Which lining is the warmest?

Shearling, then rabbit fur, then cashmere. Cashmere is warm enough for most of Europe and keeps the glove slim; rabbit fur is for hard frost; shearling is one hide with the wool grown in, so there is no seam between glove and lining.

Which leather is best for winter?

Deerskin for everyday wear — soft, breathable and the hardest-wearing leather we use. Peccary if you want the softest hand and a leather that stays supple as the temperature drops. Lambskin and nappa for a dress glove. Compare our leathers.

Can I drive in winter gloves?

In cashmere-lined ones, yes — they are thin enough to keep a feel for the wheel. Fur-lined pairs are warmer and you will notice them at the wheel. If driving is the main use, start from driving gloves instead and pick an unlined pair.

What size should I take for a lined glove?

The lining takes up room. If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one for a lined glove and the smaller one for an unlined glove. Measure around your knuckles, excluding the thumb, and check the sizing chart.

Strap, button or plain cuff?

A strap or button at the wrist closes the gap where cold air gets in, which matters more than most people expect. A plain cuff goes on faster and slides under a coat sleeve more neatly. Both are here.

Do the linings wear out?

Cashmere thins slowly over years of daily use. Rabbit fur stays soft rather than matting down, which is why we use it instead of cheaper fur. Neither should fail before the leather does.

What about snow and rain?

Fine, as long as they dry slowly. Lay them flat at room temperature, away from radiators — direct heat is what ruins leather, not water.
