What peccary is like to own
Most good leather asks for a settling-in period. You buy the gloves, they feel stiff across the knuckles for a fortnight, and then one day they don't. Peccary skips that part. The first time you put a pair on they already feel like gloves you have had for a while, and the fit only gets more personal as the leather takes the shape of your hand.
They also age well, which is the real argument for buying them. A pair worn for a few years loses its newness and picks up a faint sheen where the hand meets things — a wheel, a pocket, a door handle. Most people prefer them at that stage, and they are nowhere near finished.
What peccary actually is
Peccary comes from a wild hoofed mammal of the family Tayassuidae. It is not pig, boar or hog leather, despite how routinely it is sold as such. Ours comes from Peru, where the animals are not farmed. The hides are small, so fewer gloves come from each one — which is the honest explanation for the price.
Unlined pairs give the most feel and cover spring through autumn — mostly in peccary driving gloves. For the cold, see peccary winter gloves — lined pairs are cut to the same size as unlined ones.
