Quick answer: to break in leather gloves, simply wear them: ease each finger in, use your hands, and let their warmth do the work. A well-fitting pair relaxes across the palm and knuckles and takes the shape of your hand, but the fingers do not get longer, so no break-in will rescue a glove that is too small. Skip heat, soaking and stretching sprays.

Look up how to break in leather gloves and most of the advice is written for baseball mitts or motorcycle gauntlets: oil, steam, hairdryers, a ball strapped into the palm. A fine dress or driving glove needs none of that. This guide comes from NM Gloves, a leather-glove workshop in Târgu Mureș, Romania, where gloves have been made since 1925.
Do leather gloves need breaking in?
Less than you might expect. Glove leather is thin and supple, and a new pair should feel close and slightly snug from the first moment, never painful. With wear it relaxes a little and takes the shape of your hand. How much depends on the leather:
| Leather | On the first day | With wear |
|---|---|---|
| Deerskin (Finland) | Soft, with a little body | Moulds to your hand quickly, then holds that shape for years |
| Lambskin and nappa (Italy) | Sleek and close to the hand | Thinner than deerskin, so treat the cuff gently |
| Peccary (Peru) | Soft immediately, no breaking-in period | Stays supple in cold weather |
| Carpincho | Strong, with a fine dotted grain | Stays supple in the cold |
| Shearling | Bulkier by nature, wool against the hand | Cut to your usual size, like lined gloves |
How to break in leather gloves, step by step
- Try them on indoors first. Check the fit at home, with clean hands, before you wear them outside. Returns are accepted only for unworn gloves, so this is the moment to be sure of the size.
- Put them on finger by finger. Work each finger in and settle it, then ease the glove over the hand. Pulling hard on the cuff misshapes more gloves than wear ever does.
- Wear them and use your hands. Close your hand into a fist, hold a steering wheel. The warmth and movement of your hand are what shape the leather.
- Take them off the same way. Loosen each finger, then slide the glove off, rather than yanking it from the wrist.
- If they get wet, reshape them on your hands for a moment, then let them dry flat at room temperature.
What should you avoid?
- Heat. A hairdryer, radiator or sunny dashboard pulls the natural oils out of the leather and leaves it stiff and prone to cracking.
- Soaking, or wearing them wet to stretch them. Lined gloves in particular do not recover: the lining and the leather dry at different rates.
- Stretching sprays, alcohol, boot oils and waxes. They are made for thicker hides and will dry out or oversaturate a glove.
- Conditioner on a new pair. Our leathers are tanned to stay supple for years; most gloves never need conditioning at all. Our leather glove care guide explains when a little colourless balm helps.
Will tight leather gloves stretch?
Across the palm and knuckles, a little. In length, no. A glove that fits well:
- lies flat against the palm, without bagging;
- lets your fingertips reach the ends of the fingers without pressing hard into them;
- lets you close your hand into a fist that feels firm, without straining the seams.
If you cannot close your hand comfortably, the glove is too small, and wearing it will not change that. If there is loose material at the fingertips, it is too large. Choose the size that fits now rather than one you hope the leather will grow into. Our guide to measuring your hand for gloves takes two minutes.
What if the gloves still do not fit?
Ready-made gloves can be returned within 30 days of delivery, unworn and unused, with tags and in the original packaging; write to us and we will help you find the right size. If your hands fall between sizes, outside our ranges (women 6.5–8.5, men 7.5–10), or differ from each other, a made-to-measure pair is cut to your own measurements. It takes up to five days to make, so 8–12 days in total within the EU. Custom pairs cannot be returned, which is why we check the measurements with you first.
If you would rather skip the breaking-in altogether, look at peccary gloves, soft from the first day; for a pair that becomes your own shape over the years, deerskin gloves.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to break in leather gloves?
There is no fixed number of wears. Peccary needs no breaking in at all, and deerskin moulds to the hand quickly. If a pair still feels painful rather than simply snug, the size is wrong, not the break-in.
Should I buy leather gloves a size smaller so they stretch?
No. Leather relaxes a little across the palm, but the fingers do not get longer. Buy the size your measurement gives you.
Do lined gloves need breaking in differently?
No. The lining is allowed for in the cut, so lined, unlined and shearling gloves are the same size. After a wet day, let the lining dry completely before you put a lined pair away.
