Looking after a lined pair

Winter gloves have a harder life than any others. They get wet, they get stuffed into coat pockets, and then they sit in a drawer for six months. Almost all the damage we see comes from those three things rather than from wear.

The fix is undramatic. Dry them flat at room temperature, never on a radiator. Store them flat rather than folded, somewhere that is not airtight — a drawer is fine, a sealed plastic box is not, because a fur lining wants a little air. Do that and a pair lasts a decade.

Choosing a lining

  • Cashmere — warm without bulk, and the right choice if you want to keep feel at the wheel.
  • Rabbit fur — the warmest lining we use, and it stays soft rather than matting down over a season.
  • Unlined — for milder winters, and for anyone who wants nothing between hand and leather.

Closures matter too. A strap or button at the wrist seals warmth in; a plain cuff slips on faster. Both are here.

Cut and sewn by hand in Târgu Mureș, Transylvania, from Peruvian peccary. The unlined and hand-sewn pairs are in peccary driving gloves.

Questions we get asked

Will the fur flatten over a season?

Rabbit fur keeps its loft better than most linings, which is why we use it. It will compress where your hand presses and recover between wearings, and it should still be soft after several winters.

Can I drive in a fur-lined pair?

You can, but you will feel it. Cashmere is the lining to pick if driving matters — warm, and slim enough to keep a feel for the wheel.

Why is peccary better in the cold?

Because it stays supple when other leathers firm up. A stiff glove is a cold glove: it stops following your hand and starts pressing on it, which is when your fingers go.

What size?

One size up from an unlined glove. The lining takes room, and the air inside is doing some of the insulating — see the sizing chart.
